When Lady Gaga was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton.
And, she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit. It’s no wonder that little girl from a good Italian New York family, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady Gaga.
A private-school education and a fast-tracked scholarship through the renowned Tisch School of the Arts at New York University gave her a solid musical background, yet it was her flamboyant mix of style and pure sex appeal that took her to the top of the charts.
Lady GaGa's initial introduction to the world of music came from being signed as a songwriter for Interscope, where she would pen songs for such acts as the Pussycat Dolls and New Kids on the Block. Her own vocal talents were recognised by Akron, who helped her get signed on her own right. A series of spectacular club shows in New York - combining a potent mix of style, theatrics, pure pop and sass - set the platform for her assault on the music world.
A string of music videos and attention-grabbing singles - with 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' both hitting number one the world over, and the former nominated for a Grammy Award - provided momentum for the release of her blockbuster 2008 debut album, The Fame. The album has topped charts and achieved platinum sales across the globe.
“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady Gaga, 23.
